Tom Wilkinson grew up in England and Canada. He studied English and American literature at the University of Kent where he was involved with the university’s drama society. He trained at RADA. He began his career on stage performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He became known for his BAFTA-winning role in The Full Monty. He has since starred in a variety of movies from Shakespeare In Love to 44 Inch Chest. In 2005, he received an OBE for services to drama.

- In an interview with The Guardian, Tom Wilkinson described the BAFTAs ceremonies as looking "like they were set in a Greek restaurant in the Seven Sisters Road, with this slavish worship of any American who designed to turn up".

- In 2009 he won a Golden Globe for his performance in the TV series John Adams.
- In an interview with contactmusic.com, he discussed how he chooses roles. He said that "you can't do things for money. You just can't act them. There's gotta be something about the script that you really want to do...For me at least, there's only one shot you have at a movie, and that's your best shot".
- He married actress Diana Hardcastle in 1998. They have two daughters together.
