Biography

Robin Williams was an introverted child who overcame his shyness by acting in high school plays. After training at Juilliard, he started doing stand up gigs. His energetic comic style led to a lead role on Mork & Mindy, a hit TV sitcom that ran for four years. He moved into movies with memorable comic roles in Mrs.Doubtfire and The Birdcage. He is also an accomplished dramatic actor, winning an Oscar for his performance in Good Will Hunting.

  • Robin Williams met Christopher Reeve at Juilliard and they became close friends. A week after Christopher's horse riding accident, Robin visited him in hospital wearing scrubs, a surgical mask and talking in a Russian accent. When Robin revealed his true identity, Christopher told Robin it was the first time he had laughed since his accident. Robin dedicated his Cecille B. DeMille lifetime achievement award to Christopher who passed away in 2004.
  • He admits that he was addicted to cocaine during the seventies. His wake up call came when his good friend John Belushi died of a drugs overdose.
  • He often improvises in his roles. He regularly ad-libbed on Mork & Mindy to the point where the sitcom's writers would leave gaps in the script and write "Mork can go off the handle here". He improvised over sixteen hours of material for his role as the genie in Aladdin.
  • When Steven Spielberg was making Schindler's List, he would frequently call up Robin up and put him on speakerphone so he could tell jokes to the cast and crew to cheer them up.
  • He has an eight inch scar on his chest after undergoing heart surgery in 2009.
