Biography

Emma Thompson studied English at the University of Cambridge. She was an active member of the Cambridge Footlights comedy society. After graduating, she acted in TV shows such as The Young Ones. In 1988, she had her own TV sketch show, Thompson. She made in impact in movies with roles in Howard’s End and In The Name Of The Father. She is also a screenwriter and won an Oscar for her adaptation of Sense And Sensibility. She has also written and starred in the Nanny McPhee movies.

  • Emma Thompson is the daughter of Eric Thompson, a stage director. He also wrote and narrated the children’s TV series The Magic Roundabout. Her mother, Phyllida Law, is an actress.
  • She starred as Hugh Grant’s love interest in Sense And Sensibility and as his sister in Love Actually.
  • She was married to Kenneth Branagh from 1989 to 1995. She met Greg Wise on the set of Sense And Sensibility. They went on to marry in 2003. They have a son and daughter together.
  • At Cambridge she shaved her head. She later shaved her head again for her role as a Cancer patient in the TV adaptation Wit.
  • It allegedly took her nine years to write the first Nanny McPhee movie.
