Biography

Meryl Streep was raised in the suburbs of New Jersey. She was a cheerleader and homecoming queen at high school. After studying at Vassar College, she attended Yale University's School of Drama. She began her professional acting career on stage. She shot to fame in her first two movies, Julia and The Deer Hunter. She has earned Oscar nominations in a range of movies including The Devil Wears Prada and Doubt.

  • Growing up, Meryl Streep dreamed of becoming an opera singer. She was a member of the school choir and she took lessons with vocal coach Estelle Liebling.
  • She met Don Gummer, a sculptor and her brother's friend, when she was a lodger in his flat. In 1978 they got married. They have one son and three daughters.
  • She learned to play the violin for the movie Music Of The Heart. She practiced six hours a day for eight weeks.
  • She was engaged to John Cazale. They starred together in The Deer Hunter. She helped nurse him during the final stages of bone cancer. He passed away after the movie's shoot.
  • Her father Henry was a pharmaceutical executive and her mother Mary was a commercial artist and homemaker.
