Jim Sturgess was born in London and raised in Surrey. He developed his musical and acting skills at the National Youth Music Theatre. He went on to study media and performance at the University of Salford. An agent discovered him during his performance in one-man show Buzzin. His agent secured him an audition for his breakthrough role in Across The Universe. He has since starred in The Other Boleyn Girl, 21 and Crossing Over. He also remains an active singer and songwriter.
Jim Sturgess was close to giving up acting before Across The Universe. His last job before his breakthrough role was in The Last Detective. He appeared in the TV show as a petrol-covered naked man running across a pub.
He has appeared in A Touch Of Frost and Heartbeat.
He was in a seven piece band called Dilated Spies. When the band split up, he pursued acting.
He wrote and performed two songs in Crossover.
His idol is River Phoenix. Phoenix's attitude, look and energy inspired him to become an actor.
