Biography

Robert De Niro’s first stage part was as The Cowardly Lion in The Wizard Of Oz at the age of ten. He was raised by a family of artists in New York. He trained as a method actor at the Lee Strasberg Institute. He rose to fame playing mobsters in Mean Streets and The Godfather Part II. In 1993 he made his directorial debut with A Bronx Tale. He has since surprised audiences with Golden Globe nominated comedy roles including Analyze This and Meet The Parents.

  • A renowned method actor, Robert De Niro gained 60 pounds for his role in Raging Bull. He worked as a cab driver for three months to prepare for Taxi Driver. He learned to play the saxophone for New York, New York. He lived in Sicily for The Godfather: Part II. He ground his teeth down for Cape Fear and he learned how to box to for his role in Raging Bull.
  • In 1989, he co-founded the production company Tribeca Productions with Jane Rosenthal. The company has produced movies including Meet The Parents, About A Boy and Public Enemies. The duo branched out to establish the Tribeca Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival International and Tribeca Cinemas.
  • As a teenager he was briefly a member of a gang in Little Italy. The gang gave him the nickname Bobby Milk, because of his pale skin.
  • Before he made his big breakthrough in Mean Streets, he appeared in Sesame Street. In December 2004, he sang a festive duet with Kermit the Frog on Saturday Night Live.
