Biography

Growing up, Julianne Moore lived in 23 places in the US and Germany due to her father’s military work. She studied acting at Boston University. After graduating, she moved to New York to become an actress. From 1985 to 1988, she played identical twins on the US soap opera As The World Turns. In 1997 she got her big break in the movie Boogie Nights. She has starred in a range of movies from The Lost World to A Single Man.

  • Born Julie Ann Smith, she had to change her name to Julianne Moore as her birth name was already registered with the Screen Actors Guild. Moore is her father's middle name.
  • In 2007 she wrote a children's book called Freckleface Strawberry. The book's title refers to a nickname she was given at school. The book has reportedly been turned into an off-Broadway musical.
  • In an interview with Parade, she discussed her intimate movie scenes. She admitted "I have trouble kissing people. That's the scariest thing for me to do, frankly, is kiss an actor, because it's very intimate. On or off-screen, whenever you kiss anybody for the first time it's terrifying".
  • She learned to swim at the age of 27.
  • She was married to the actor and director John Gould Rubin from 1986 to 1995. She married the director Bart Freundlich in 2003. They have a son and a daughter together.
