Biography

Ewan McGregor was raised in Crieff, Scotland by his teacher parents. In 1988, he moved to London to study at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He left the course early when he landed a major role in TV series Lipstick On Your Collar. He rose to fame in Danny Boyle’s first three features Shallow Grave, Trainspotting and A Life Less Ordinary. He has since starred in a wide variety of movies including the Star Wars prequel trilogy and Moulin Rouge!

  • Ewan McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman completed a trip from London to New York by riding his motorcycles. The journey took him 115 days to complete and he documented his trip in a book and TV series called The Long Way Round. He also did another series, The Long Way Down, where they travelled 5,000 miles on motorcycles from John O'Groats to South Africa.
  • He met Eve Mavrakis, a production designer, while they were working on the TV show Kavanagh QC. They married in France in 1995.
  • After his first motorcycle journey, he adopted a four-year-old Mongolian girl named Jamiyan with his wife Eve Mavrakis. They also have two daughters.
  • He was Emmy-nominated for his performance as a gunman in a convenience store robbery in an episode of ER.
  • Growing up, his acting idol was his uncle Dennis Lawson. Coincidentally, Dennis starred in the original Star Wars trilogy as fighter pilot Wedge Antilles.
