Biography

Texas-born Tommy Lee Jones funded his education by working on oil-fields and earning scholarships to St. Mark’s School of Texas and Harvard University. After college, he moved to New York. The following year, he made his movie debut as a Harvard graduate in Love Story. He came to prominence in 1981 for his Golden Globe nominated performance in Coal Miner’s Daughter. He has continued to attract audiences with movies like The Fugitive and No Country For Old Men.

  • During Tommy Lee Jones' time at Harvard, he shared a room with future Vice President Al Gore. They remain good friends.
  • When he moved to New York, it only took him ten days to secure acting work on Broadway in the play A Patriot For Me. His sudden career rise is featured in a Ripley's Believe It Or Not cartoon strip.
  • He starred as a doctor on soap opera One Life To Live from 1971 to 1975.
  • He is an avid polo player. He first became interested in the sport when his friends gave him a polo mallet and ball. To complete his polo set-up, he borrowed a saddle from a Hollywood studio's property department. He now owns several polo horses.
  • When he received his Oscar for The Fugitive, he had shaved his head for a role in Cobb. At the start of his acceptance speech, he said ''The only thing a man can say at a time like this is, I am not really bald!'
