Richard E. Grant was born and raised in Swaziland. His father was the Swazi Minister of Education. His mother was a ballet teacher. He studied drama at the University of Cape Town. At college, he set up the multi-racial Troupe Theatre Company. He acted in the troupe’s plays for two years. He moved to London in 1982 after his father died. His breakthrough role was in cult movie Withnail & I. He has built up a reputation playing eccentric characters in movies such as Jack & Sarah.
