Michael Fassbender was born in Germany, his father was German and his mother Irish. He was raised by his parents in Killarney, Ireland. He moved to England to study at the Drama Centre London. He landed roles in TV series including Hex and Band Of Brothers. He went on to play the lead role in British movies Hunger and Eden Lake. These performances raised his profile overseas. Since then, he has starred in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.
Michael Fassbender went on a medically monitored crash diet to play Bobby Sands in Hunger. He lost 14 kilograms for the role and by the end of filming he weighed 59 kilograms. He claimed that he had to go to such extremes to make the movie believable.
He speaks fluent English and German.
In 2008 he was nominated for the Orange Rising Star Award at the BAFTAs.
He is allegedly related to Michael Collins on his mother's side of the family. He played Michael Collins in the play Allegiance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Before landing his role on Hex, he was a bartender.
