Born in San Luis Obispo, Zac Efron’s middle class family later moved to Arroyo Grande. He appeared in school plays and amateur productions including Peter Pan. He got his first taste of Hollywood when his theatre teacher, Robyn Metchick, introduced him to an agent in LA. He cut his TV teeth in guest roles in ER, Firefly and CSI: Miami. His breakthrough role came in 2006 when he starred in High School Musical. His subsequent movie work ranges from Hairspray to Me And Orson Welles.
Zac Efron’s singing voice in the Disney Channel’s original first television movie High School Musical (2006) was actually that of Canadian Andrew (Drew) Seeley. Drew is a regular singer on Disney soundtracks and compilations.
He became the first artist to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with two songs in the same week with the High School Musical tracks: Get'cha Head In the Game and Breaking Free.
Simon Cowell offered him a record deal but he turned it down, claiming that acting was his main priority.
Towards the end of filming 17 Again, he had appendicitis. He had initially dismissed it as bad wind. He went straight to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after filming and had to have an emergency appendectomy that night.
He and his High School Musical co-star Ashley Tisdale successfully got Punk’d during a shopping trip. Zac witnessed two men walk in to the shop and take the cash box. However, when Zac reported the crime, the manager accused Zac of letting people steal.
