Orlando Bloom studied drama, photography and sculpture at A Levels. He won a scholarship to the British American Drama Academy. He studied at Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he was spotted by Peter Jackson. Two days after graduating, he got his breakthrough role in The Lord Of The Rings movies. He followed it up with another trilogy, The Pirates Of The Caribbean. He continues to perform in diverse roles from Troy to Elizabethtown.
When Orlando Bloom was 21, his career almost came to a halt when he broke his back. He fell three stories from a roof terrace. He was told by medical staff that he might never walk again. However after an operation, he was able to leave the hospital twelve days later. He subsequently played a soldier who broke his back in Black Hawk Down.
Growing up, he thought his father was political activist, Harry Bloom, who passed away when he was four. When he was 13, his mother told him that his birth father was in fact family friend Colin Stone.
Along with the other main cast members of The Lord Of The Rings films, he got a tattoo of the Elvish number nine. He also has a tattoo of the sun on his chest that he got as a teenager.
He made his acting debut as a rent boy who propositioned Stephen Fry in the movie Wilde.
He initially struggled in school due to his dyslexia. As an adult, he now describes his condition as mild.
