Did you know?

  • This film is based on the novel of the same name by Philip K. Dick. The novel was about Dick's personal battle with drugs. Dick's daughters gave director Richard Linklater their father's own copy of the novel when he completed this movie.
  • The look of the film was achieved using rotoscoping. This is a technique where animators trace over live-action film, frame by frame. Each minute of animation required 500 hours of work by 50 animators.
  • Robert Downey Jr. wrote most of his lines down on paper notes and scattered them around the set so he could read them while filming his scenes. The rotoscoping team simply animated over the notes in post-production.
  • Terry Gilliam was at one point attached to direct this film with a script that had been written by Charlie Kaufman.
  • Alex Jones, a real life conspiracy theorist, makes a cameo appearance in this movie as the Street Prophet.
