Set during 19th-Century Japan, the monarchy has decided to do away with the samurai warriors in favour of a more modern army. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is a disillusioned veteran of the U.S. Civil War. He is hired by the Japanese Emperor to train an army capable of destroying the samurai. But when he is captured by the samurai he comes to respect their way of life, making him question who he should be fighting for. Co stars Billy Connolly. Contains strong violence.
