Germany, WWII. Following a family tragedy, young Liesel is adopted by Hans Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush) and his wife Rose (Emily Watson). Liesel is bullied at school for being illiterate so Hans teaches his adopted daughter how to read and write, despite literary works being confiscated and burnt by the Nazis. When Hans offers a mysterious Jewish man refuge from the Nazis, Liesel and the stranger form a bond over their love of literature. Contains scenes of emotional distress and moderate threat.
