Melvin (Jack Nicholson) is a writer with an obsessive-compulsive disorder. He takes pride in his ability to offend everyone, including his gay neighbour (Greg Kinnear). The only person who stands up to him is Carol (Helen Hunt), a sweet-natured waitress who serves him breakfast. After his neighbour is badly beaten up, the three of them are forced to go on a road trip together. As Melvin falls in love with Carol, the three of them make realisations about themselves. Co stars Cuba Gooding Jr. Contains frequent strong language and one strong violent scene.
