When a lethal South American spider hitches a ride inside a coffin, dead bodies with strange bite marks start appearing all over town. Spider expert Dr James Atherton (Julian Sands) is called in to investigate and realises a new breed of deadly spider is causing the deaths. As the search for the spider's nest becomes critical, new GP Dr Ross Jennings (Jeff Daniels) must confront his fear of spiders when he realises his barn is the deadly spider's home. Contains mild language with some scary scenes of spiders.

  • Mustard packs were crushed underfoot for the visual effect of squashing spiders. To achieve the sound of a spider being crushed two potato chips where crunched together.
  • Frank Marshall, long-time producer of many Spielberg films makes his directorial debut with this film.
  • Since spiders cannot be trained to act a certain way, hairdryers were used to get them to move in a specific direction.
  • The small spiders used in the film were a harmless species from New Zealand. However the giant spider was a bird-eating tarantula which can give a nasty bite to humans. Therefore the spiders were handled by famed entomologist Steven R. Kutcher.
